Albarello (storage jar)

Siena, c. 1510 - 1520

22.7cm (height)

tin-glazed earthenware (maiolica)

An attractive, though somewhat battered, example of a type made in Siena in the first quarter of the 16th century. The use of a dark red, which tended to fire badly if used on anything other than small areas, is a characteristic of Siena and a few other maiolica centres. The contents inscription is CANFORA (camphor).
